The Plan:

Sat 3rd –leave Oa maru about 6.30am and drive to the Greenstone carpark near the head of Lak e Wakatipu\, possibly stopping at Glenorchy for lunch. Hike up to the 24 b unk Mid Caples Hut – about 3 hours.

\n

Sun 4th – hike the 22kms (7 hours) over the McKellar Saddle (945 metres) to McKel lar Hut – 24 bunks.

\n

Mon 5th – hike the 18kms (6 hours) to the Greenstone Hut – 20 bunks.

\n

Tues 6th – hike the 12 kms (5 hours) back out to the carpark\, then drive home.

\n

Hut bookings are not required – first come\, first served and backcountry hut passes cannot be used. Huts cost $25 and camps ites $10 a night. We may stop in Queenstown to buy hut tickets. Tents may be required.

\nSaturday: From Brod Bay\, the track climbs steeply through mountain and silver beech forest\, passes under towering l imestone bluffs (after about 2 hours) and heads for the bush line. From he re you have panoramic views and it takes about another 45 minutes to walk to Luxmore Hut (1085 m). Carpark to Luxmore Hut 5-6 hours. Maurice and Phy llis will be our friendly Hut Wardens. Water is available at the hut but t ake your own cookers as no gas. The hut will be booked a few days prior to the weekend\, dependent on weather.

\nSaturday: From Br od Bay\, the track climbs steeply through mountain and silver beech forest \, passes under towering limestone bluffs (after about 2 hours) and heads for the bush line. From here you have panoramic views and it takes about a nother 45 minutes to walk to Luxmore Hut (1085 m). Carpark to Luxmore Hut 5-6 hours. Maurice and Phyllis will be our friendly Hut Wardens. Water is available at the hut but take your own cookers as no gas. The hut will be booked a few days prior to the weekend\, dependent on weather.

 Starting from Blueskin Road above Port Chalmers\, this 
 circuit will take in some of the prominent peaks on the ancient crater rim
  northeast of Mt Cargill\, providing spectacular views over the Otago Harb
 our and Otago Peninsula\, the Pacific coast and surrounding hills and vall
 eys of the Dunedin area. A fairly short walk along Cedar Farm Road leads t
 o Cedar Farm Reservoir\, from where marked tracks through the forest give 
 access to the peaks of Mt Cutten (530m) to the south (including the Len Ly
 e memorial sculpture on Mt Cutten)\, with Mt Kettle (545m) and Mihiwaka (5
 61m) to the north. Time permitting\, a further track to the northern peak 
 of Mopanui (468m) may also be an option. Debrief in Orokon
 ui Ecosanctuary café or in Waitati.

The Ewe Range is south of Omarama at the end of Broken Hut 
 Road. After crossing the Little Omarama Stream\, we follow a zig-zag 4WD e
 asement over farmland up 600 metres until we reach a lookout at 1331m with
  views over the McKenzie Basin.  From here the gradient eases off and we w
 ill continue south and then return the same way.

While servicing the automatic traps in Herbert Forest\, I w
 alked the Hoods Creek Track today and was saddened to find it in very poor
  condition. The track is almost at the point of closure unless urgent work
  is done to bring it back up to standard.

 Instead of the scheduled Tabletop tramp this Sunday\, we 
 are proposing an emergency working bee. This is our chanc
 e to restore Hoods Creek Track quickly and effectively.
