Sat 3rd-Tues 6th February (Waitangi weekend): Caples-Greenstone Circuit With Waitangi Day being on Tuesday 6th February, take the Monday off and let’s go and do the Caples and Greenstone Tracks. The Plan: Sat 3rd –leave Oamaru about 6.30am and drive to the Greenstone carpark near the head of Lake Wakatipu, possibly stopping at Glenorchy for lunch. Hike up to the 24 bunk Mid Caples Hut – about 3 hours. Sun 4th – hike the 22kms (7 hours) over the McKellar Saddle (945 metres) to McKellar Hut – 24 bunks. Mon 5th – hike the 18kms (6 hours) to the Greenstone Hut – 20 bunks. Tues 6th – hike the 12 kms (5 hours) back out to the carpark, then drive home. <h3 class="western">Sunday 13th August: Mt Cutten, Mt Kettle, Mihiwaka</h3> Starting from Blueskin Road above Port Chalmers, this circuit will take in some of the prominent peaks on the ancient crater rim northeast of Mt Cargill, providing spectacular views over the Otago Harbour and Otago Peninsula, the Pacific coast and surrounding hills and valleys of the Dunedin area. A fairly short walk along Cedar Farm Road leads to Cedar Farm Reservoir, from where marked tracks through the forest give access to the peaks of Mt Cutten (530m) to the south (including the Len Lye memorial sculpture on Mt Cutten), with Mt Kettle (545m) and Mihiwaka (561m) to the north. Time permitting, a further track to the northern peak of Mopanui (468m) may also be an option. Debrief in Orokonui Ecosanctuary café or in Waitati. Sun 16th June: Ben Lomond The Ben Lomond ridge separates the Maerewhenua and Otekaieke valleys. This tramp will start in the Otekaieke valley, climb on to the ridge and then along it to Lower Ben Lomond (994 metres) and, time and energy permitting, Ben Lomond itself (1052 metres). The route then drops down to the Otekaieke Bridle Track and back along to the cars. After crossing the Little Omarama Stream, we follow a zig-zag 4WD easement over farmland up 600 metres until we reach a lookout at 1331m with views over the McKenzie Basin. Emergency Working Bee – Hoods Creek Track Date: Sunday 30th November Time: 8:00 AM Meeting Point: Medway Street car park for lift sharing or 8:30 AM at Swallows Track car park While servicing the automatic traps in Herbert Forest, I walked the Hoods Creek Track today and was saddened to find it in very poor condition. The track is almost at the point of closure unless urgent work is done to bring it back up to standard. Call to Action Instead of the scheduled Tabletop tramp this Sunday, we are proposing an emergency working bee. This is our chance to restore Hoods Creek Track quickly and effectively. <ul> <li>Bring snipping and cutting tools (loppers, saws, secateurs, etc.)</li> <li>Wear sturdy footwear and bring gardening gloves</li> <li>There is a lot to do, and a strong turnout means the jobs can be shared among many hands and can restore it to a safe and enjoyable standard for everyone</li> </ul> The Herbert forest tracks are part of our club’s history and community work Pacific/Auckland
